Shulou(Shulou.com)11/24 Report--

CTOnews.com Sept. 26, Samsung Electronics announced that it has developed its first 7.5Gbps (CTOnews.com Note: 0.9375GB/s) low-power compression additional memory module (LPCAMM) form specification, which is expected to change the DRAM (dynamic random access memory) market for personal computers and notebook computers, and even change the DRAM market for data centers.

According to Samsung's press release, so far, personal computers and laptops are using traditional LPDDR DRAM or DDR-based So-DIMM (small dual embedded memory module). However, due to structural limitations, LPDDR needs to be installed directly on the motherboard of the equipment, making it difficult to replace during maintenance or upgrading. In contrast, although So-DIMM can be installed or removed more easily, there are still many limitations in terms of performance, power consumption, and other physical features.

With the growing demand for more efficient and smaller devices in the industry, LPCAMM is expected to overcome the shortcomings of both LPDDR and So-DIMM. As a detachable module, LPCAMM provides greater flexibility for PC and notebook computer manufacturers in the manufacturing process. In addition, compared with So-DIMM, LPCAMM occupies up to 60% less on the motherboard. This not only makes more efficient use of the internal space of the device, but also improves performance and energy efficiency by 50% and 70%, respectively.

Samsung said that this breakthrough research and development achievement has been verified on the Intel platform. Samsung will work with major customers, including Intel, to test LPCAMM on next-generation systems this year, and plans to commercialize it in 2024.
