Thanks to CTOnews.com netizen Coje_He for the clue delivery! CTOnews.com Sept. 26, the Unity engine recently announced a new Unity charging model, which will be introduced according to the number of games installed from January 1, 2024, which has aroused widespread opposition in the industry. Although Unity officially announced improvements later, it still failed to satisfy everyone and completely annoyed even the most loyal developers.

Boston Unity Group, the earliest Unity user community, or BUG, has announced that it will be officially closed on Wednesday, September 27, local time.

The official announcement of BUG attached to CTOnews.com is as follows:

BUG, founded by Elliott Mitchell and Alex Schwartz in the summer of 2010, is the world's first official Unity user community. At the time, the Unity game engine was still a relatively new technology, providing creators with a tool available to publish games on a variety of platforms.

For the past 13 years, BUG has held regular monthly gatherings, including social events, technical lectures, group discussions, interviews, parties, demonstration nights, seminars, etc.

BUG's membership has grown from dozens to thousands, bringing together independent developers, enthusiasts, AAA developers, AI researchers, museum exhibition designers, medical technology innovators, archaeologists, automotive designers, software engineers, 3D filmmakers, VR/ XR game makers, educators and countless others from Boston.

From the first day of its founding, BUG has been enthusiastically recognized and supported by Unity and former CEO David Helgason. Unity officially provides logistical support, Pro license giveaways, seminars, demonstrations, sponsorship, Unite speaking opportunities, and so on. In the early days, David and Unity understood that nurturing a community of grassroots independent developers was crucial to sowing the seeds of long-term Unity growth and achieving the goal of democratizing game development for people in a variety of industries.

Unfortunately, over the past few years, Unity has shifted its focus away from the gaming industry and supporting the developer community. Since IPO went public, the company seems to value profit above everything else, making a number of acquisitions and layoffs of its core staff. Many of the key systems that developers need are still in a chaotic and often incomplete state, and advertising and revenue are more important to Unity than the features that game developers care about.

Recently, Unity announced a series of unimaginable hostile terms of service and price changes for its users. Widespread and unequivocal condemnation from the gaming industry is unprecedented, and Unity has no choice but to undo some of the most shocking changes. Even with these new concessions, the revised pricing model will disproportionately affect the success of independent studios in our community.

More importantly, we have seen how easy and reckless it is for executive-led business decisions to risk the bankruptcy of our hard-built studios and threaten our livelihoods as professionals. and challenge the lasting development of our entire industry. Today's Unity is no longer the company it was when it was founded, and the trust we once had in the company has been exhausted.

Since its launch in 2010, BUG has focused primarily on supporting developers, rather than Unity. As members of the broader Boston game developer community, we believe that our efforts as organizers should be better used to create opportunities for everyone, not just Unity users. Please join us and we will work together in the larger local development community to continue to hold events and demonstrations for all to enjoy.

We encourage members to join the Boston Game Development gathering Group (Boston Game Dev meetup group), where they can continue to use Unity, Unreal, Godot and other tools to connect with local developers.
