ChatGPT is a robot chat and writing tool developed by American artificial intelligence manufacturer OpenAI. Last week, the use of ChatGPT on computers and smartphones in the United States increased by about 12% from a month earlier, according to data from technology market research firm SimilarWeb.

YipitData, another technology market research firm, also said that during the summer vacation in August, ChatGPT usage reached a low point, but in the second half of August, usage began to rise.

However, a number of data show that the current traffic is still relatively low compared with the peak of ChatGPT usage this spring.

As American students return to school, ChatGPT traffic begins to grow, which is likely to add to some concerns about "student abuse of AI". At present, ChatGPT is very popular among students. Students can use this tool to generate computer program code, generate summary reports, write term papers, or complete homework in a few minutes.

For OpenAI, if the proportion of students in ChatGPT users is too high, it may affect future income growth. After all, students are not a stable user base in business.

YipitData's research report points out that according to the company's analysis, the recent rise in ChatGPT access traffic, student return to school is a driving factor, but not the only reason.

According to the analysis, the student group will often use ChatGPT in learning and education-related areas, and the use of the student user group has increased by as much as 21%, while that of the non-student group has increased by only 8%. SimilarWeb points out that students going back to school is a major reason for the increase in ChatGPT traffic.

Sensor Tower, another data analysis company, says ChatGPT's weekly visits around the world increased by 10% in the last two weeks of August, at a time when a large number of students in the United States are returning to school. In addition to the student factor, another reason for the increase in traffic is an increase in visits from India and Brazil, the company said.

OpenAI did not comment on the changes in traffic.

Last November, ChatGPT officially launched its service, and this generative artificial intelligence product quickly attracted people's attention and became popular all over the world. Two months after its launch, the number of global users has exceeded 100 million.

However, after months of rocket growth, ChatGPT traffic began to turn downwards. ChatGPT visits to the US fell by 10 per cent in May and 15 per cent in June and 4 per cent in July.

The popularity of ChatGPT in the world also forces schools at all levels to seriously examine the impact of generative artificial intelligence on students. Some schools directly prohibit students from using it, while others integrate artificial intelligence technology into the curriculum to help students improve their learning efficiency.

It is reported that some schools have formulated guidelines and policies on generative artificial intelligence, but more schools have given power to teachers to decide how students use artificial intelligence tools in class.
