Mitsubishi Chemical has announced that it will build a new semiconductor materials plant in Japan, which will start production as early as fiscal year 2024 (CTOnews.com Note: March 2025), mainly producing polymer materials for photoresist (photosensitive materials). Coupled with the existing base, Mitsubishi Chemical expects its production capacity to double.

The investment in the new plant is expected to reach billions of yen, the production site will be finalized in the future, and factories in Fukuoka Prefecture will be candidates.

As a reference, Japan began to restrict the export of three key semiconductor materials of high purity hydrogen fluoride, fluorinated polyimide and photoresist to South Korea in July 2019, and the restrictions were lifted on March 16 this year.

According to reports, these three materials are the key materials in South Korea's semiconductor and display industry. In 2019, Japan accounts for 90% of the global production of fluorinated polyimide and photoresist, and Japan accounts for about 70% of the high-purity hydrogen fluoride market. Japan's restrictions on the export of these materials to South Korea have had a serious impact on industries such as South Korean semiconductors.
