In the mathematical era, open source software has received unprecedented attention because it has become the core support of the competitiveness of enterprises, but today, when the storm of reducing costs and efficiency is sweeping the world, it is difficult to persist in investing in open source. NetEase has been active on the road to open source. Recently, the Envoy community announced that Wang Baiping, a native technical expert from NetEase Jiefan Cloud, has been formally accepted for promotion as community senior maintainer.

Envoy is one of the veteran graduation projects of CNCF (Cloud Native Computing Association). It has become the de facto standard for service grid and API gateway data. It has been widely adopted by Google, Amazon, Microsoft, Netflix, Salesforce and other enterprises, and is also used in NetEase's financial-level distributed base. The announcement means that Wang Baiping will take greater responsibility for the core code and security updates of the project, making it easier for cloud native practice requirements originating in China to be integrated into the community roadmap.

In April 2022, Wang Baiping became maintainer of Envoy community, breaking the situation of lack of countrymen in the core development circle of Envoy project. In May of the same year, Envoy Gateway, a new project of the Envoy community, was born, which aims to make Envoy "reach the masses" in the role of API gateway and play a more important role in the entire cloud native technology stack, which is highly consistent with NetEase's native technology development plan.

Up to now, Wang Baiping is still the only maintainer born by a local enterprise in the Envoy community, which is also highly recognized by global participants in the cloud native community for NetEase's strength and contribution in the field of service grid and gateway related technology.

Since then, relying on NetEase's research and development in the field of cloud native service grid and gateway, the practice of finance, energy and other industry scenarios, as well as the development of independent open source projects Hango and Slime, Wang Baiping has constantly given back to the Envoy community, committed to the evolution of core competencies such as multi-protocol governance support, multi-protocol observability, enhanced filter chain performance and capabilities, and load balancing module scalability. At the same time, it also continues to improve the code quality of the Envoy project itself and contribute to the development of the community.

Specifically, its work mainly includes generic proxy framework support, logging / formatter / tracing template / multi-protocol reconfiguration, route granularity filter chain, load balancing modular reconfiguration, and so on.

Moreover, with the support of the team, Wang Baiping adheres to the open source concept of "community-driven" and actively participates in community issue discussions and PR review to promote the healthy development of Envoy communities and projects, so that this technology has more vitality.

The choice and persistence of Envoy is also an example of NetEase's customer-centered R & D investment. Matt Klein, the founder of Envoy Proxy, once admitted that Envoy had been ridiculed for writing in C++, but he thought it was an example of focusing on the actual needs of end users and the market rather than succumbing to the hype. The results also proved that customer and market focus is the only way to achieve great success. NetEase Jiefan embraced Category, which appears to be a relatively minority in the cloud native field for real demand, and has also been recognized by both the community and customers.
