CTOnews.com, September 25 (Xinhua)-- the American asteroid sampling probe "OSIRIS-REx" has sent back to Earth a capsule of rock and dust collected from the asteroid Benu that landed at 10:52 EDT in the target area of the Defense Department's Utah Test and training Yard near Salt Lake City, Utah, the NASA website announced.

CTOnews.com learned from NASA that the capsule was transported by helicopter to a temporary clean room set up in the hangar of the training ground and was now connected to the nitrogen stream. The return samples collected from Benu will help scientists around the world better understand the formation of planets and the origins of the organic matter and water that lead to life on Earth.

It is understood that "nitrogen purging" to obtain samples is one of the most critical tasks of the OSIRIS-REx team today. Nitrogen is a gas that does not interact with most other chemicals and continues to flow into the sample container in the capsule, blocking Earth's pollutants and keeping the sample pure for scientific analysis.

Bennu samples (250g) will be shipped to NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston in unopened cans on Sept. 25 (now Sept. 24). The scientists will take samples and weigh them to create a list of rocks and dust.
