CTOnews.com, September 24 (Xinhua)-- Valve, a company known for its mystery, rarely reveals its development plans, whether in games or virtual reality (VR). However, a recent update to the Steam client suggests that the company is secretly developing a long-awaited stand-alone VR header.

Brad Lynch, a technical analyst and Steam data mining expert, found that the latest update to the Steam client contains some battery-related VR-specific strings, which seems to support the rumor that Valve is currently preparing a platform for some kind of stand-alone VR header display.

The update also mentions that some new UI elements, icons, and animations have been added to the VR section of the Steam client, which should not be done for competitors' headers.

At the same time, South Korea's National Radio Research Institute (RAA) recently certified a "low-power wireless device" from Valve. It is not clear whether the device is really a standalone VR head display, as the radio certification only mentions that it uses the 5 GHz wireless band.

Valve has not publicly announced that it is developing a freestanding VR headset, but it is likely to launch a freestanding Index in 2024 amid increasing competition between Apple and Meta. Valve Index is widely considered to be the most suitable head display for PC VR, with excellent quality, performance and comfort.

CTOnews.com noted that in early 2022, Valve boss Gabe Newell called his Steam Deck handset "a stepping stone to standalone VR hardware" and said the Steam Deck represented a "battery-capable, high-performance horsepower device that can be used in VR applications."
