CTOnews.com Sept. 24, according to the latest data from IDC global augmented reality and virtual reality (AR / VR) quarterly tracking report, global AR / VR headline shipments declined for the fourth consecutive quarter in the second quarter of 2023, with shipments down 44.6% year-on-year. The growth of the market has been further hampered by downward pressure on the global economy, dampening demand and the negative impact of rising Quest 2 prices, coupled with the untimely updating of hardware versions by several suppliers.

CTOnews.com notes that Meta's position as a market leader has not changed, as the company had a 50.2% market share in the second quarter of 2023. However, the company does face challenges from Sony (27.1% market share) and byte jump (9.6% share of PICO), both of which increased their market share in the second quarter of 2023. Xreal (formerly Nreal) and Big friend VR ranked fourth and fifth, respectively, with a market share of just over 2 per cent.

AR / VR sales in 2023 are only slightly higher than in 2017, and IDC expects to ship 8.5 million units this year. But IDC predicts the market will rebound in 2024, growing by 46.8% year-on-year, thanks to Meta and byte-bouncing new hardware, the launch of Apple's Vision Pro and the growth of small companies. By 2027, the global market is expected to reach 30.3 million units.
