CTOnews.com, September 24, Microsoft clarified in a podcast on YouTube that they have no plans to replace the traditional command prompt (cmd.exe) with Windows terminals (Terminal) in Windows 11 or next-generation operating systems.

As we all know, Windows Terminal provides a lot of practical features that do not exist at the command prompt, such as label support, split panes, custom wallpaper, and a large number of custom settings, and you can even set the GIF background.

Microsoft first released Terminal at the Build developer Conference in 2020, but it has evolved into a mature terminal environment with backward compatibility, GPU rendering acceleration, modern text rendering and other complete content, and you can also call Linux, CMD and PowerShell in the same place.

CTOnews.com notes that the recent Windows 10 update also adds a new feature option that allows users to set Terminal as the default terminal environment.

Although some users worry that the rise of Terminal and AI may cause the command prompt to be cut or renamed, according to Microsoft project manager Christopher Nguyen, Microsoft will keep the command prompt intact.

"this is a very common problem. The command prompt and Windows Terminal work together," Christopher Nguyen points out. He added that the command prompt can be seamlessly integrated with Windows Terminal.

"Windows Terminal acts as the host for the command line shell, such as a command prompt," he says. "when you enter commands in the terminal, it passes them to CMD for execution and then displays the results."

"Custom backgrounds not only enhance personal style, but also help to distinguish between shell," the project manager added.

Of course, Microsoft may not have intended to replace the command prompt with Terminal, but some users are worried that Microsoft may stop using the command prompt or the brand name of PowerShell and call all terminals Terminal.
