CTOnews.com, September 22, GitHub began testing Passkey in July this year. According to its official blog, GitHub has officially announced the launch of Passkey service, and all GitHub users can enable Passkey in their account security settings.

▲ source GitHub official blog CTOnews.com learned after inquiry that Passkey is a login authentication file composed of a set of keys, in which the public key is used to register the website or App, while the private key is stored on the user's equipment. After the user registers Passkey, the user can use various biometric functions (such as fingerprint, iris) and PIN code on the device to log in to various website services with one click, because PassKey is based on FIDO 2 / WebAuthn standard. Therefore, it supports cross-platform use.

GitHub allows users to register Passkey for different devices. At present, browsers such as Linux platform and Firefox support Passkey is not perfect, so GitHub decided to provide cross-device Passkey registration function, for example, users can use their mobile phone to register Passkey, and then log in on the computer.

▲ source GitHub official blog the current goal of GitHub is to promote all accounts to have multiple 2FA login credentials, in case users can retrieve their accounts through other credentials when a certain credential is lost. Therefore, when GitHub finds that the user's device is compatible with Passkey, it will remind the user to sign up for Passkey.

In addition, cloud-based Passkey services also support credential synchronization across devices. For example, Apple iCloud accounts can synchronize iOS and macOS's Passkey,Google code verifier can synchronize the Passkey,1Password of all Android devices and other third-party password management programs can also synchronize the Passkey of all devices on which the program is installed.
