Thanks to CTOnews.com netizen OC_Formula for the clue delivery! CTOnews.com, September 22 (Xinhua) in an effort to reduce screen power consumption, Intel has developed an entirely new system based on webcams to confirm whether users are staring at the screen, turn it off if not, and turn it on again if necessary.

Intel has integrated UBRR (User-Based Refresh Rate), a power-saving feature in Intelligent Display technology, and when turned on, the laptop detects whether the user's face is facing the screen through a webcam.

The UBRR function will increase or decrease the brightness and refresh rate of the display according to the user's usage. If the user is detected to leave the laptop completely, the screen is completely closed to conserve more battery power.

Intelligent Display technology can also automatically adjust the refresh rate according to what is displayed on the screen, such as running a video call app, which is limited to 30 frames per second. The system can also automatically adjust the brightness and contrast in some scenes in the movie.

Intel says the latest Intelligent Display technology can reduce laptop battery consumption by 24%; if UBRR is turned on and the screen is allowed to be turned off, power consumption can be reduced by 42%.

CTOnews.com learned from the report that Intel Intelligent Display technology is not currently integrated into any new processor and requires a special chip built into the screen to take effect.

The chip is also operated by an Intel graphics driver. The company is working with laptop makers to integrate the technology into their products.

Notebooks with Ultra (Meteor Lake) processors are expected to be the first to ship with Intelligent Display technology when they ship in December this year. Intel said that the cost of Intelligent Display technology is relatively high at this stage, and only high-end notebooks will be equipped at the initial stage.
