CTOnews.com, September 21 (Xinhua)-- Panos Panay, head of Microsoft's Windows and devices division, announced his departure from the company a few days ago after nearly two decades at Microsoft. The former executive was promoted to senior leadership team (SLT) more than two years ago, so his departure was somewhat sudden, especially with Microsoft's upcoming Surface event. Although Microsoft stresses that it is still committed to its Windows and Surface products, the latest report shows that this is not entirely the case.

Windows Central and Insider quoted insiders as saying that Microsoft was cutting back on "experimental" Surface hardware, mainly Surface Duo, Surface Studio and Surface Headphones. The above products have not been completely cut, but they have clearly been downgraded and no new products will be launched in the "foreseeable future".

Currently, the Surface team's plan is to focus only on its most popular hardware families, namely Surface Pro, Surface Laptop, Surface Laptop Go, Surface Laptop Studio, Surface Hub, and Surface Go.

It is worth noting that Microsoft has not confirmed these rumors. The company is expected to release new Surface hardware, including Surface Laptop Studio 2, Surface Go 4 and Surface Laptop Go 3, in the early hours of tomorrow, as well as demonstrate artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities provided by dedicated neural processing units (NPU) for Surface devices.

CTOnews.com notes that Microsoft's latest strategic shift and reduced focus on experimental and niche products run counter to Panos' innovative philosophy, which has been promoting more unique hardware ideas, which may be one of the main reasons for the executive's departure. Whether this move will make Surface products more mainstream and more profitable in the near future remains to be seen.
