Update: Google clarifies that the partnership remains the same.

According to reports on the afternoon of September 21, Beijing time, Google plans to abandon Broadcom and develop its own AI server chip as early as 2027, according to people familiar with the matter.

Google and Broadcom failed to reach an agreement on chip pricing earlier this year, the person familiar with the matter said. To this end, Google decided to abandon Broadcom as a supplier of its AI chip tensor processing units (TPU).

Google executives have discussed this extensively. This means that Google will design its TPU chip on its own. The move is expected to help Google save billions of dollars a year. At present, Google is investing heavily in artificial intelligence research and development. Compared with other types of research and development, artificial intelligence research and development is particularly expensive.

Chen Fuyang (Hock Tan), CEO of Broadcom, recently said that generative artificial intelligence will account for more than 25 per cent of the company's semiconductor revenue next year. Artificial intelligence accounted for about 15 per cent of Broadcom's semiconductor business revenue in the second quarter of fiscal 2023 to the end of April, compared with just 10 per cent in fiscal year 2022.

Last year, OpenAI, an artificial intelligence start-up backed by Microsoft, launched a generative chat robot ChatGPT, which sparked an arms race for AI technology in the technology industry. This year, Google has also increased its investment in generative artificial intelligence to catch up.

Google's artificial intelligence chat robot Bard received 183 million visits in August, just 13% of ChatGPT visits, according to research firm Similarweb.

At the same time, Google plans to work with chipmaker Marvell Technology to launch a new network chip next year, codenamed Granite Redux, according to people familiar with the matter.

Google, Broadcom and Marvell have yet to comment.
