CTOnews.com Sept. 21, according to the latest report released by market research firm Canalys, domestic spending on cloud infrastructure services reached US $8.7 billion in the second quarter of 2023, an increase of 19% over the same period last year.

The sharp increase is mainly due to a change in the way market leader Ali Yun reports its cloud revenue after it became independent from its parent company, Ali Group. Excluding the impact of this change, the performance of China's cloud services market is still conservative, with a medium single-digit growth rate.

In the second quarter of 2023, the leading vendors in the Chinese mainland cloud infrastructure market remained unchanged, while Aliyun, Huawei Cloud and Tencent Cloud were far ahead. Together, the three account for 72 per cent of Chinese mainland's total cloud spending.

Last quarter, Aliyun was spun off from Ali Group and became an independent operation division, which is planned to be spun off and listed next year.

As a result, Aliyun announced that cloud consumption within Alibaba Group, such as Taobao and Cainiao, would be included in cloud revenue. To some extent, this change has increased the proportion of direct sales revenue in the overall market.

Aliyun continues to lead the Chinese cloud services market, with a 39% share of revenue. However, the reorganization of Ali Group makes Aliyun's future strategy unclear for the time being. This month, the cloud computing department changed CEO. With the growth of AI demand, Aliyun has launched two noteworthy products: AI audio product "General sense understanding" and painting creation tool "General meaning Vientiane".

These are new products on the basis of the independent research and development basic model "synonymous Qianwen", which was launched in April 2023.

At the same time, Aliyun announced a new policy at the Aliyun partner Summit in the second quarter of 2023, accelerating the pace of building a partner ecosystem on Chinese mainland and globally. The new policy aims to encourage channel development through more transparent goals, higher partner commissions and clearer role positioning.

Huawei Yunwei ranks second with a market share of 19%. Huawei cloud grew 14% year-on-year this quarter and is steadily narrowing the gap with Aliyun. Huawei Cloud launched its own AI model "Pangu" in July to enhance its competitive position in the market.

The AI foundation large model adheres to the "AI for industries" strategy and aims to seamlessly integrate AI technology with specific use cases in each vertical industry.

Huawei also announced a partnership program centered on the Pangu model in August 2023, dividing the roles of software partners and service partners. The newly launched Pangu program focuses on the empowerment of partners, while introducing specific incentives, certification and technical support.

Tencent Cloud ranked third in the second quarter of 2023, with a market share of 15%, an increase of 6% over the same period last year. Although Tencent Cloud's AI product launch is slightly slower than its competitors, it has taken steps to catch up.

In June this year, it unveiled a roadmap for the development of the AI model, launching AI's one-stop service, Model as a Service (MaaS), focusing on industry-specific solutions.

After the release of the roadmap, Tencent officially launched the AI basic model "Mianyuan" in September 2023. The basic model will also be integrated into several flagship SaaS products owned by Tencent.
