Shulou(Shulou.com)11/24 Report--
CTOnews.com, Sept. 20 (Xinhua) Electric vehicles are usually criticized for the loss of mileage in cold climates, but a new study of Tesla cars shows that cold areas may have better long-term protection for electric vehicle batteries than hot areas.
Recurrent Auto, a US electric vehicle research company, shared the results of a study on Monday showing that Tesla cars owned and used in cold climates have better average endurance scores than Tesla cars in hot climates. The study analyzed data from more than 12500 Tesla cars in the United States, which were obtained by Recurrent through its software.
CTOnews.com noted that although the study found that this phenomenon existed in several Tesla models and years, it was most obvious in the Model Y model. In particular, the average endurance score of the 2020 Model Y is 95 in cold climates and 92 in hot climates, as shown in the following figure.
A Tesla car with a range rating of 90 means it still has an initial range of 90 per cent. In addition, the study is based on the U.S. Department of Energy's "hot", "cold" and "ocean" climate division.
As for why the study only targeted Tesla cars, Recurrent explained that this is because Tesla is the most common electric vehicle brand and can provide the most data. They also mentioned Tesla's battery temperature management system, saying it can well prevent the environment from causing damage to the battery's long-term health.
According to Recurrent, heat in the environment provides extra energy to the electrochemical reactions of electric vehicle batteries, accelerating unnecessary chemical reactions and causing battery aging. 30 degrees Celsius is recognized as the critical temperature to accelerate battery degradation.
Although it may consume more energy to keep the cockpit warm in cold climates, resulting in a decline in battery life, Recurrent says this is short-term. Because it does not have the same electrochemical effect on electric vehicle batteries as heat does, when the temperature increases, the battery life will be restored.
Tesla owners in a hot climate can take some measures to protect their batteries. First, parking your car in the shade or in the garage can help prevent the battery from overheating. When forced to park in the sun, Recurrent recommends charging only about halfway, because the battery is more stable at that level.
In addition, whether buying new or used cars, buyers can consider vehicles that use new lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries because they are more resistant to hot climates. In addition, buyers of second-hand electric cars should consider how the car was stored and used in the hands of previous owners.
Finally, the researchers strongly recommend buying cars with active thermal management systems, and owners should plug them in when they are not in use. According to Recurrent, this allows the vehicle to start the battery at a lower temperature than when the plug is unplugged.
