CTOnews.com, September 20, European Automobile Manufacturers Association (European Automobile Manufacturers'Association) released data on September 20, showing that in August, the market share of pure electric vehicles exceeded 20% for the first time, surpassing diesel cars for the second time this year to become the third most popular choice for new car buyers.

Pure electric models accounted for 21 per cent of EU sales in August, exceeding 1/5 of total car sales for the first time, according to the European Association of Automobile Manufacturers. EU pure electric vehicle sales more than doubled in August from a year earlier to 165165. Nearly 1 million pure electric vehicles were sold in the EU in the first eight months of 2023.

Overall, EU car sales rose 21 per cent in August, the 13th month in a row.

CTOnews.com noted that EU internal combustion models accounted for less than 50 per cent of sales in August, plug-in hybrids (made up of engines and rechargeable batteries) accounted for 7.4 per cent of sales, while full hybrids (with larger batteries and charged by engines rather than plugs) accounted for 23.9 per cent of sales. Diesel models account for only 12.5% of sales.

Sales of Volkswagen, Europe's largest car seller, rose 21.2% in august, according to the association of European automakers, up 6.4% for dint Stellantis and 22.3% for Renault.
