CTOnews.com, September 20 (Xinhua)-- Security analysis company AV-Comparatives recently released a survey report on antivirus software on the market from July to August 2023, comparing various popular antivirus solutions on the market.

After inquiry, CTOnews.com learned that the security company used 64-bit Windows 10 Professional Edition for testing, and the software tested included Avast, Avira, BitDefender, Kaspersky, McAfee, Microsoft Defender, Norton and so on.

The number of test documents is even smaller than the February-March Survey report at the beginning of this year, with 520 test cases reported in February-March, compared with 254 this time.

As AV-Comparatives explains, the decrease in the number of test cases is mainly due to the following reasons:

Over the past year, we have evaluated tens of thousands of malicious URL. Unfortunately, many of them have to give up for a variety of reasons.

We remove duplicate malware, such as the same malware hosted on different domain names or IP addresses, websites that have been tested, "gray websites" or non-malicious websites / files, and malware / websites that disappear during testing.

Due to patch-level reasons, many malicious URL with vulnerabilities cannot invade the selected system / application. This means that the vulnerability of the third-party application in the system has been patched, so the exploit program cannot send a malicious payload.

The literal performance of antivirus software dropped slightly. Microsoft Defender successfully intercepted 100% of malicious test cases in previous reports, but this time the interception rate dropped to 99.2%.

In terms of false positive rate, Microsoft Defender dropped to one from two last time, but in terms of percentage, due to the decrease in the number of samples, the false positive rate was roughly the same as last time.
