Shulou(Shulou.com)11/24 Report--
CTOnews.com, Sept. 20 (Xinhua)-- in May, Musk's brain-computer interface startup Neuralink obtained a human clinical trial license from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to conduct trials with its brain implants and surgical robots.
On Tuesday, local time, Neuralink announced approval for its first human clinical trial, as well as approval from the hospital site. Patients with quadriplegia caused by cervical spinal cord injury or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) may be eligible for the test, Neuralink said.
The six-year preliminary trial is what Neuralink calls the "PRIME study," meaning "precision robot implantable brain-computer interface (CTOnews.com Note: Precise Robotically Implanted Brain-Computer Interface)."
According to reports, the project aims to evaluate the security and function of its fully implantable wireless brain-computer interface, focusing on three parts: N1 implants, R1 robots, and N1 user applications.
The study will use surgical robots to implant N1 implants into areas of the brain that control motor intentions (which look like normal people when placed), and then use the App to connect to N1 and convert neural signals into computer movements.
The initial goal of our BCI is to allow people to control the computer cursor or keyboard just by thinking.
In fact, researchers have long been testing implants that allow paralyzed patients to control computers and other devices. For example, two recently published studies have shown that brain-computer interfaces can help ALS patients communicate by typing on their computers.
Participants in the PRIME study will first participate in an 18-month study, including nine visits by researchers, Neuralink said. After that, they will spend at least two hours a week attending brain-computer interface workshops, followed by 20 more visits over the next five years.
Although Neuralink did not say how many subjects it was looking for or when it planned to start the study, it confirmed that it would compensate for "research-related costs", such as transportation to and from the research site.
