Shulou(Shulou.com)11/24 Report--
CTOnews.com, September 19 (Xinhua)-- music streaming platform Spotify has once again expressed dissatisfaction with the 30% commission charged by Apple's App Store App Store, saying it harms competition and consumer choice. Spotify believes that companies should have the opportunity to win over consumers on a level playing field. CTOnews.com noted that Spotify pointed out in a new press release that Apple's restrictive policy conflicts with this principle and unfairly favors its own economic interests.
Spotify points out that while some progress has been made in Europe, regulatory intervention around the world is still insufficient. This allows Apple to maintain monopoly control over App Store, increasing costs for consumers and hampering developers' innovation. Spotify said Apple's approach had a negative impact on user experience and innovation. Spotify said, for example, that because of Apple's limitations, they had to create a complex process for audio books, resulting in a poor user experience. In addition, Spotify points out that it can't provide customers with price information about premium membership upgrades, offer payment options other than Apple's rules, or launch new features without Apple's explicit permission.
Spotify also expressed concern about sharing confidential business plans with Apple during the approval process, which could give their main competitors an unfair advantage. They also point to inconsistencies in Apple's policies, such as the fact that Apple's own apps such as Apple Music do not have to pay a 30 per cent commission, which puts third-party developers and their customers at a disadvantage. In fact, Spotify doesn't have to pay Apple a 30% commission in most cases. After the first year of subscription, Apple's fee was reduced to 15%.
The dispute between Apple and Spotify has been going on for years. In 2019, Spotify filed an anti-competition complaint in the European Union. In July 2023, the company announced that it would cut off the remaining customers who pay Spotify premium membership fees through the Apple Store. Apple refutes Spotify's allegations, saying the company wants to "enjoy all the benefits of free apps without paying a price".
