For the majority of consumers, the biggest change of 5G compared with previous generations of mobile communication technology is the faster data transmission speed, and the faster the generation and transmission of data, the more power is consumed in coding and decoding. The past 4G coding scheme is difficult to support the ultra-fast data transmission speed of 5G. In this regard, Qualcomm began to study advanced LDPC (low density parity) channel coding technology more than a decade before 5G was commercialized, and combined LDPC with hybrid automatic repeat request (ARQ, the basic link of cellular communication) to support data transmission speeds up to dozens of Gbps while minimizing power consumption. It means that consumers can also experience faster 5G speeds on small devices such as smartphones.
In addition, Qualcomm also focuses on promoting 5G technological innovation for the industry. For example, in terms of cellular vehicle networking (C-V2X), Qualcomm is involved in driving the development of Rel-14 and Rel-15 C-V2X technologies aimed at providing basic security features. On this basis, Qualcomm continues to promote the directly connected communication technology in Rel-16, bringing significant improvements in many aspects, such as higher throughput, lower delay and reliable distance-based multicast, which helps to improve the efficiency and safety of self-driving and semi-autonomous driving. In the new version of 5G standard Rel-17, C-V2X technology has been more enhanced, including supporting reliable communication between cars and pedestrians, cyclists, etc., and further improve the efficiency and safety of traffic operation. At this year's Service Trade Fair, the "5G fully connected Factory" project jointly created by Qualcomm and Chinese industrial partners was rated as the "demonstration case of scientific and technological innovation service". This is another practical case of Qualcomm working with partners to promote the application of 5G technology to the industry. The project is planned by the China Industrial Internet Research Institute, Qualcomm provides all-round technical support, and uses 5G modules deployed by China Telecom and 5G modules provided by Mobile Communications.
