Thanks to CTOnews.com netizen Alejandro86 for the clue delivery! CTOnews.com Microsoft stopped supporting Edge on Windows 7, 8 and 8.1 as early as January 2023, meaning Edge 109 is the last updated version of Edge for these operating systems.

However, Microsoft occasionally releases security updates and critical patches for user security concerns, such as the recently released patch for version 109.0.1518.140.

This update only adds fixes for a few security vulnerabilities, namely heap buffer overflow (CVE-2023-4863) in WebP in Chromium versions before 116.0.5845.187, which allows remote attackers to perform out-of-bounds memory writes using crafted HTML pages.

However, CTOnews.com checked Microsoft's official website and found that this occasional patch fix will also end on October 20, and the mainstream browser support for the old system will only be Firefox. However, Firefox 115 Extended Support Release (ESR) is also scheduled to end in September 2024.
