Dear leaders, distinguished guests and industry partners, good afternoon, everyone! It gives me great pleasure to attend the China Radio Conference to discuss with you the development trends and trends of wireless technology and industry, and to share the work Qualcomm has done in the process of working with partners to promote the high-quality development of the digital economy with wireless innovation.
Over the past four years of 5G commercial use, China has built the world's largest 5G network, with increasingly rich end products, more than 60% of the national economy, and increasing breadth and depth of application, which promotes the deep integration of the digital economy and the real economy. At present, 3GPP Release 17, the third version of the global 5G standard, has been frozen, which represents the successful completion of the first phase of the evolution of 5G technology. Release 18 is in progress, and from Release 18 to Release 20 will form the second phase of the 5G standard, that is, 5G Advanced.
Based on the existing 5G technology, 5G-Advanced will support more extended features, such as RedCap for Internet of things terminals with lower complexity and expansion in more fields, enhanced industrial Internet of things, non-terrestrial network, etc., which will enable 5G to enter a wider range of industries and applications.
Taking wireless connection technology as an example, Qualcomm offers an industry-leading portfolio of connection technologies, including 5G, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. In order to better support the new round of 5G innovation, Qualcomm launched two new 5G modems and RF system chips in February this year.
Snapdragon X75 is the world's first 5G Advanced-ready modem and RF system, while introducing the second generation Qualcomm 5G AI suite to further break through the dimensions of network coverage, delay, energy efficiency and mobility. Not long ago, Snapdragon X75 also achieved downlink speeds as high as 7.5Gbps, creating the world's fastest 5G transmission speed record in the Sub-6GHz band, further breaking the 5G performance boundary. The Snapdragon X35 is the world's first 5G RedCap modem and RF system, with excellent energy efficiency, excellent positioning accuracy and rich use cases such as smartwatches and entry-level Internet of things terminals.
Another key technology developed in parallel with 5G is AI. With the blessing of 5G technology, the rich data generated by the Internet connection terminal can be shared to the cloud in real time, large-scale data analysis and machine learning become possible, and the terminal experience will also benefit from the increasing content, processing power and storage space in the cloud. At the same time, the terminal-side AI, which cooperates with the cloud, develops rapidly with the help of 5G, bringing higher privacy, reliability and lower latency, which has become a powerful supplement to cloud intelligence. The coordinated development of 5G and AI will help release each other's greater technological potential, give birth to revolutionary technological progress and application innovation, and accelerate the digital transformation of various industries.
This year, generative AI has become a hot spot in the industry. Qualcomm believes that the future artificial intelligence will be a hybrid AI architecture, and AI will work together on the cloud, edge cloud and terminal side, so that the computing and processing power in the entire system can be redistributed in the most efficient way, enabling a more powerful, more efficient and highly optimized AI.
The gain of AI to the whole wireless communication system is very obvious. AI can be distributed in multiple links from cloud to end, supporting efficient network planning, continuous optimization, enhancing service experience, and improving the performance of the whole wireless communication system through end-to-end AI cooperation. For example, with the blessing of AI, the terminal can more comprehensively grasp the characteristics and changing trends of the wireless channel, make the channel state prediction and feedback more accurate, and help to improve the throughput and other key performance indicators.
With many advantages such as higher cost, higher performance and privacy security, terminal-side AI becomes the key to enabling hybrid AI, and enables generative AI to scale out. With the shrinking of the powerful generative AI model and the continuous improvement of terminal-side processing capacity, the potential of hybrid AI will further grow. Today, AI models with more than 1 billion parameters can run on mobile phones with performance and accuracy similar to those in the cloud. In the near future, models with 10 billion or more parameters will be able to run on terminals.
During the MWC held earlier this year, Qualcomm showed the world's first Stable Diffusion terminal-side demonstration running on an Android phone. By performing full-stack AI optimization through the Qualcomm AI software stack, we enable Stable Diffusion to run on a smartphone and perform 20-step reasoning in 15 seconds to generate an image of 512x512 pixels. This is the fastest reasoning speed on a smartphone, comparable to cloud latency, and user text input is completely unrestricted.
We are also continuing to improve the model parameters that the terminal side can support to release the greater potential of the terminal side AI. In June, Qualcomm showed a terminal-side demonstration of running ControlNet on the world's fastest mobile phone. ControlNet is a model that generates images from images. In this use case, the user enters an image and a text prompt to turn the vase in the picture into a Renaissance painting. We believe that terminal-side AI and other cutting-edge technologies are expected to open a new innovation cycle and bring greater development opportunities for the industry.
The integration of 5G and AI will also accelerate the digital transformation of various industries, become the "twin engines" of digital economic growth, and accelerate the opening of the digital future. In the past year, Qualcomm has also joined hands with Chinese industrial partners in related fields to explore and achieve some results.
5G is an important cornerstone of building the Internet of everything, and meta-universe is one of the important application scenarios to demonstrate the potential of 5G. We believe that the XR terminal will become the entrance to the meta-universe and a new generation of mobile computing platform with broad prospects. Thanks to the integration of 5G, AI and XR, the real world and the virtual world can be connected, people and everything will communicate and interact seamlessly in the meta-universe, a personalized digital experience is within reach, and will have a far-reaching impact on the digital upgrading of many industries, including the transformation from traditional sports to intelligent sports.
Last year, Qualcomm, Zhonghe Group and China Mobile worked together to demonstrate the experience scheme of 5G unbounded XR events, showing a new path for the construction of "smart workers". This year, the tripartite cooperation has once again achieved new results, realizing for the first time the application experience of the integration of the metacosmos based on the 5G existing network, which marks another important progress in the deployment of the worker universe on the ground.
From the video below, you can see that with the global coverage of 5G existing network and the "business-network-computing" integrated solution of unbounded XR, users only need to wear portable head display devices to enjoy the meta-universe experience of binocular 4K picture quality and latency as low as 20 milliseconds.
In the field of industrial manufacturing, 5G also has great potential. Through 5G, fully connect people, machines, things, systems, etc., to build a new manufacturing and service system covering the whole industry chain. Among them, 5G private network is a wireless solution tailored for industrial Internet applications, with its own network ID, independent architecture and support for mobile edge computing; in addition, 5G also supports ultra-reliable low-delay communications, time-sensitive networks and high-precision positioning.
Qualcomm is working with industrial partners to accelerate industrial Internet innovation. Last year, Qualcomm, together with partners such as China Industrial Internet Research Institute, China Telecom and Mobile Communications, carried out a 5G fully connected factory project in Kone Elevator Kunshan Industrial Park in Jiangsu Province. To meet the needs of Kone elevator factories, a 5G technology network based on Qualcomm solution has been built. At present, the "5G fully connected Factory" project has achieved positive practical results and realized a number of industrial interconnected applications. At the 2023 Service Trade Fair held this month, the project was rated as a "demonstration case of scientific and technological innovation services".
In the era of growing network video traffic, especially with the coming tide of using generative AI to produce video content, video compression technology is becoming more and more important. Recently, Qualcomm and Tencent brought the world's first VVC mobile phone optimization demonstration, which was unveiled at the 2023 ChinaJoy Snapdragon theme Pavilion. VVC is the latest video codec standard. By introducing high-performance algorithm strategy, VVC can save more than 35% of the bandwidth compared with the previous generation of coding technology. 4K 10bit 60 frames per second (fps) ultra-high definition stream can achieve high-quality image quality only with 10Mbps, which is equivalent to compressing the original picture by 1200 times.
This demo is based on the Tencent H.266 software decoder. Through the joint optimization of Tencent and Qualcomm, it makes full use of the CPU and GPU processing capabilities of the second generation Snapdragon 8 mobile platform, so that the complex algorithms in the new generation standard can also run smoothly on the mobile platform. The overall performance of the software decoder is improved by more than 30%, and 4K 10bit 60fps UHD VVC content can be played stably and smoothly in real time. This result means that users will enjoy more shocking and realistic visual effects and smoother game operation and viewing experience in cloud games, live streaming, VOD and other applications. The era of ultra-high definition and ultra-high frames is coming.
