CTOnews.com, September 16 (Xinhua)-- according to research by scientists at the Goddard Institute for Space Research (GISS) in New York, this summer is the hottest year on the planet since global records began in 1880, NASA announced on September 14.

According to the NASA, the total temperature in June, July and August was 0.23C higher than any other summer since NASA records, and 1.2C higher than the average summer temperature between 1951 and 1980. Scientists at GISS claim that higher temperatures in the summer of 2023 continued a long-term warming trend, mainly due to man-made greenhouse gas emissions.

The new record comes as unusually high temperatures sweep across much of the world, exacerbating deadly wildfires in Canada and Hawaii, as well as searing heatwaves in South America, Japan, Europe and the United States. it could also cause heavy rainfall in Italy, Greece and Central Europe.

Gavin Schmidt, director of the GISS, pointed out that July is hotter than any other July, the hottest month on record (dating back to 1880). "Science has proved that this is not normal. Global warming is mainly caused by man-made greenhouse gas emissions, and rising average temperatures are contributing to the danger of extremely hot weather."
