CTOnews.com, Sept. 16 (Reuters)-the United Auto Workers Union (UAW) said it planned to resume negotiations on Saturday after the union went on strike at three plants owned by General Motors, Ford and Chrysler parent company Stellantis.

CTOnews.com learned that nearly 13000 UAW members went on strike at three Detroit plants: Michigan, Missouri and Ohio, belonging to Ford, General Motors and Stellantis, when their contracts expired at 11:59 EDT on Thursday night, but no agreement was reached.

The knock-on effect of the strike spread on Friday when Ford laid off 600 workers who did not strike, and GM told about 2000 workers at an auto plant in Kansas that their plant could then be closed because of a shortage of parts.

Ford spokeswoman Jessica Enoch said that because the company's production system is "highly interconnected", a targeted strike in the paint department "will have a knock-on effect on facilities that do not shut down directly". The laid-off employee works in the body manufacturing department and the metal stamping sub-assembly area of the factory.

"this is not a stoppage. The layoffs are the result of a strike in the final assembly and painting department of the Michigan assembly plant because the materials used in the parts made by the 600 employees must be protected by electrophoretic painting, while the paint department is on strike." Enoch said.

UAW wants wages to rise to 36 per cent within four years, while carmakers propose an increase of no more than 20 per cent. The union also wants to end the two-tier wage system, in which it takes four years for new workers to earn the same wages as long-term employees.
