CTOnews.com, Sept. 15-Apple updated its browser extension in July to allow Mac Chrome browsers to access iCloud Keychain passwords, while in the upcoming Chrome 118 version, it allows access to Passkey stored in iCloud Keychain.

Currently, Chrome browsers in Mac only allow access to third-party accounts stored in Google Password Manager, while in Chrome in Beta, users can log in to the website using any Passkey stored and synchronized to iCloud Keychain.

In the Chrome 118browser for Beta, the user visits the chrome://password-manager/settings page and displays the option of "Use passkeys across your Apple devices":

When enabled, you can access the Passkey created in iCloud Keychain and use it on your current Apple device.

When this option is disabled, you can access the Passkey created under the current device Chrome account.

When the user uses the Passkey login page created in iCloud Keychain, a prompt appears that requires Touch ID confirmation to proceed to the next step.

CTOnews.com Note: Passkey needs to be available in macOS 13.5 and later. The Chrome 118 stable release is expected to be officially released in early October this year.

Passkey is a digital credential that is used as an authentication method for a Web site or application. The key standard is a password-free authentication promoted by the World wide Web Consortium and the FIDO Alliance. They are typically stored by the operating system or Web browser and use the cloud to synchronize between devices from the same ecosystem, but they can also be limited to a single device, such as a physical security key. Compared with traditional authentication methods, cryptographic keys are designed to be more convenient and more anti-phishing.
