CTOnews.com, September 14 (Xinhua)-- Game engine maker Unity announced this week that it will charge developers a percentage of fees, which makes many developers reconsider whether to choose their main competitor Epic Games's Unreal Engine (Unreal engine).

Epic Games has also responded by offering native Unreal Engine support for Apple's Vision Pro, a hybrid reality headset that will be released in early 2024. Victor Lerp, a XR product expert at Epic Games, said the company was "exploring native Unreal Engine support for Apple Vision Pro", but noted that it was "too early to share the scope or timetable of support".

At its Vision Pro launch on WWDC in June, Apple highlighted its native support for Unity in its upcoming XR operating system, VisionOS. Soon after, Unity began to provide beta versions of its VisionOS-supported engines.

The new plan for the Unity engine will require users of its free development services to pay Unity $0.20 for each installation after the game reaches the threshold of 200,000 downloads and revenue of $200000 (CTOnews.com Note: currently about 1.456 million yuan). Users who subscribe to Unity Pro for $2000 a year have a different fee structure, which decreases as the number of installations increases. This change will take effect on January 1, 2024.

The rising price of the Unity engine has led many small and medium-sized teams to consider whether to switch to the more complex Unreal Engine, or other game engines.
