CTOnews.com, September 14 (Xinhua)-- Toyota plans to launch its next-generation electric car in 2026, with a range of 800km and 40% cheaper than Toyota's bZ4X when it goes on sale.

The electric vehicle will offer two new battery options, namely the range-focused lithium-ion battery and the affordable lithium iron phosphate battery. Between 2027 and 2028, Toyota will also introduce a high-performance lithium-ion battery with a range of 1000 km and 10 per cent cheaper than existing lithium-ion batteries.

Toyota expects to sell 3.5 million pure electric vehicles worldwide by 2030, of which 1.7 million are these vehicles.

"We need all kinds of batteries, just like we have different types of engines," said Yukio Kato, president of Toyota's electric vehicle development center. "it is important to provide battery solutions tailored to various models and customer needs."

Toyota says reducing the height of the battery is a key factor in improving efficiency because it reduces body height and air resistance. The current bZ4X battery height is about 150mm, while the next generation model's battery height will be reduced to 120mm. Toyota also confirmed that this would enable it to produce "high-performance sports models" with a battery height target of 100mm.

CTOnews.com noted that in addition to lithium-ion batteries and lithium iron phosphate batteries, Toyota is also developing solid-state batteries, a new type of battery that uses solid electrolytes instead of liquid electrolytes. Toyota says it has made a breakthrough in solid-state battery technology and plans to mass-produce solid-state batteries by 2028. The first generation of solid-state batteries will also provide a range of 1000 kilometers and can be recharged from 10% to 80% in 10 minutes, while high-performance lithium-ion batteries take 20 minutes. Toyota is also developing a higher-specification solid-state battery that aims to provide a range of more than 1600 kilometers.
