Thanks to CTOnews.com netizens Wu Yanzu in South China for the delivery of clues! CTOnews.com Sept. 14, Canonical has been silent about their (Open) ZFS plan, but according to foreign media 9to5linux, in the current Ubuntu 23.10 installation program, the official has added support for the ZFS file system.

CTOnews.com learned that ZFS is a file system with logical volume management function, which originated from the file system developed by Oracle for the Solaris operating system. The file system emphasizes scalability, has a large number of protection measures to prevent data corruption, in addition to support "high storage capacity, efficient data compression, integrated file system, volume management, snapshot and write-time replication, continuous integrity check and automatic repair, RAID-Z, native NFSv4 AC" and other features.

When Canonical released a new version of the Flutter-based Ubuntu Linux desktop installer earlier, it did not support ZFS root file system installation, and in the advanced disk option of the Ubuntu 23.10 desktop installer, this option to install to ZFS has been restored.

The Subiquity error report submitted by Tim Holmes-Mitra, director of desktop engineering at Ubuntu, three weeks ago confirms Canonical's intention for Ubuntu 23.10:

Version 23.10 will add support for ZFS (including in subiquity and desktop installers), and version 23.10 does not support ZFS encryption.

▲ source GitHub, but Ubuntu's ZFS support is still considered "experimental" support. Because the OpenZFS kernel driver is still outside the Linux kernel tree, users may still be at risk of system crashes, and EXT4 is still the default file system on Ubuntu desktops and servers.

Foreign media believe that Ubuntu 23.10 is supported by Linux kernel 6.3, so ZFS installation should work. However, OpenZFS does not yet support the latest Linux 6.5 kernel series, which Canonical plans to add by default in the final Mantic Minotaur release. Hopefully by then, OpenZFS will support Linux kernel 6.5.

Ubuntu 23.10, one of the long-awaited versions of Ubuntu, will be equipped with the latest GNOME 45 desktop environment and Linux 6.5 kernel series by default, and the related beta version will be publicly tested on September 21, 2023.
