CTOnews.com, Sept. 13 (Xinhua) Jim Farley, CEO of the US auto giant Ford, said Tuesday night that he was still hopeful of avoiding the upcoming strike, but he also stressed that there was a "limit" to the company's demands on unions.

"We are optimistic that we can solve this problem within the next 48 hours," Tuyuan Pexels Farley told reporters after a launch event at the Detroit auto show. He was referring to contract negotiations with the United Auto Workers (UAW). "We are absolutely ready to go on strike, and I know UAW is also, but we don't want that to happen," he said.

Ford and two other Detroit giants, General Motors and Stellantis, have been in difficult negotiations with UAW to reach a new four-year contract. Shawn Fain, the new chairman of UAW, said that if the three companies fail to reach a preliminary labor agreement by Thursday night's deadline, the union could launch a strike in all companies.

Farley said Ford, which made a third offer to UAW earlier on Tuesday, said it had given the company's "most generous" pay increase in 80 years, including pay increases, elimination of graded wages, inflation protection, five weeks of paid leave, 17 days of paid leave, higher pensions and continued investment in American factories. However, the requirement of working four days a week is not included.

Farley pointed out that Finn's requirement for 32-hour or four-day work is "unacceptable" and that "the company's sustainability has a bottom line." Farley said employees would "work around the clock" for the next 48 hours to reach an agreement.
