CTOnews.com Sept. 13, Sony Semiconductor Solutions (SSS) recently announced the development of a new module that converts electromagnetic noise into energy to power Internet of things (IoT) devices.

CTOnews.com Note: this compact module is 7mm in size and 1.2mm in thickness and can provide continuous power to Internet of things devices even without active use of electromagnetic radiation sources. At present, this technology is still in the development stage, but it can foresee a broad application prospect.

Sony says the module can extract energy from electromagnetic noise "floating in the air around us". The noise comes from household and industrial appliances such as lighting, cars and even elevators.

The technology is based on the metal parts of the Internet of things equipment as antennas, intercepts electromagnetic waves in the range of several hertz to 100 MHz, and then converts the captured waves into current through a special rectifier circuit, which can power the Internet of things devices.
