In the article "Unity charging model and supporting service updates", Unity engine officials said that from January 1, 2024, new Unity Runtime fees will be introduced according to the number of games installed. In addition, in November this year, the Unity engine will add free tools and services such as cloud-based asset storage, Unity DevOps tools, and the ability to run AI models locally, based on existing subscription plans.

According to Unity officials, the Unity Runtime fee introduced this time is based on the number of times a high-quality game has been downloaded by end users. This billing method was chosen because Unity Runtime is also installed every time the game is downloaded. In addition, Unity officials also believe that the charging model based on the initial installation will allow creators to continue to make money while interacting with players, which is different from the revenue-sharing model.

Games that trigger Unity Runtime fees need to meet the following two conditions:

1) the revenue of the game has exceeded the minimum income threshold in the past 12 months

2) the game has exceeded the minimum number of life cycle installations.

In order to avoid having an impact on games that are still in their growing stages, Unity has officially set a fee threshold, and only games that meet the following threshold are required to pay Unity Runtime fees:

Unity Personal and Unity Plus: revenue in the past 12 months has reached or exceeded $200000 (currently about 1.46 million yuan) and has reached 200000 game life cycle installations.

Unity Pro and Unity Enterprise: revenue in the past 12 months has reached or exceeded $1 million (currently about 7.3 million yuan) and has reached 1 million game life cycle installations.

As a result of this new charging model, starting January 1, 2024, Unity officials will provide Unity Personal to everyone, regardless of their income, giving creators more flexibility in managing licenses. However, when the game revenue and installation exceed the fee threshold, the studio will need to pay a small fixed fee for each installation of the game. Finally, in order to streamline the subscription plans offered, the Unity Plus subscription program will no longer be available to new users from September 12, 2023. Currently, existing Unity Plus users do not need to do anything. Officials provide existing users with the option to upgrade to Unity Pro subscription at the current Unity Plus subscription price, with a subscription period of one year.
