CTOnews.com Sept. 13, chip industry analysts said that although the demand for PC chips is still weak, the memory chip market has now shown signs of recovery, especially in the field of mobile DRAM chips.

Samsung Electronics recently signed agreements with its customers, including Xiaomi, OPPO and Google, to supply DRAM and NAND chips at a price 10-20 per cent higher than its existing contracts, according to the Korea Economic Daily.

A Samsung executive said the company expected the balance of supply and demand in the memory chip market to tilt towards supply shortages as early as the fourth quarter of this year. In other words, Samsung believes that Q4 in the memory chip market may be in short supply.

The chipmaker also plans to supply memory chips at higher prices to Samsung's mobile business unit, which makes Galaxy smartphones, to reflect the rising price of mobile chips, the sources said.

One of the sources said: "We understand that Chinese customers have agreed to accept Samsung chip price increases because they expect smartphone sales to grow, especially in overseas markets."

Smartphone makers' chip inventory levels have fallen as the chip industry has slashed production since the end of 2022, according to industry watchers.

In the upstream market, the price of DRAM chips such as LPDDR5X is gradually rising, benefiting from the recent boom in the release of new smartphone products.

Market research firm TrendForce said Samsung began to rein in production in the second quarter and expects further tightening in the third quarter. Analysts point out that as inventories dwindle, a price rise is imminent.

TrendForce also said that South Korean memory chipmakers are determined to raise the price of their latest chips, and that the price increase is likely to continue into the fourth quarter. Other industry executives say that in the NAND flash market, customers have stopped cutting orders and are starting to place more orders.
