According to reports, Thunderbolt 5 can provide 80 Gbps of bi-directional bandwidth, and can achieve up to 120 Gbps of bandwidth through bandwidth enhancement function (Bandwidth Boost), providing users with a more perfect display effect. In terms of power supply, Thunderbolt 5 supports up to 240W. These upgrades will enable Thunderbolt 5 to have up to three times the bandwidth of existing connectivity solutions, meeting the needs of content creators and gamers for higher bandwidth. At the same time, Thunderbolt 5 supports industry standards, including USB4 V2, and is fully compatible with previous generation Thunderbolt and previous versions of USB.

The bidirectional bandwidth of Thunderbolt 5 is twice that of Thunderbolt 4, and for video-intensive applications, Thunderbolt 5 provides up to 120 Gbps of bandwidth through the bandwidth Enhancement feature (Bandwidth Boost), which is three times the bandwidth of Thunderbolt 4.

Doubling the data throughput of PCI Express can support faster external storage speed and better performance of releasing external graphics cards.

Built on industry standards including USB4 V2, DisplayPort 2.1, and PCI Express Gen 4; fully compatible with previous versions.

When using Thunderbolt for point-to-point networking, the bandwidth is doubled, and the faster connection from PC to PC is realized.

Based on existing printed circuit boards, USB-C connectors and passive cables, the new PAM-3 signal coding technology is used to achieve significant performance improvement.

Intel said that all Thunderbolt products have undergone rigorous certification tests to ensure excellent wired connectivity solution performance for the PC industry, and royalty-free Thunderbolt logos are available for tested products. Computers and accessories based on the Intel Thunderbolt 5 controller (codenamed Barlow Ridge) are expected to go on sale in 2024.
