On the evening of September 12, Beijing time, the US Department of Justice's antitrust lawsuit against Google's search business will be heard in Washington, D.C., on Tuesday. The lawsuit is regarded as "the Battle of the Soul of the Internet".

The DoJ is expected to elaborate on how Google keeps its search engine ahead by paying billions of dollars a year to mobile phone makers such as Apple, telecoms operators such as AT&T and browser makers such as Mozilla.

At the same time, Google's defense is simple: Google's dominant market share is not because of illegal behavior, but because it provides a fast, efficient search service that is free.

Google lawyers will argue that users can remove Google apps from their devices or enter URLs in browsers to access other search engine services such as Microsoft Bing, Yahoo or DuckDuckGo. In this case, consumers insist on using Google because the Google search engine can provide the answers they need without disappointing them.

The trial, which starts with Tuesday's opening statement, is expected to last 10 weeks and is divided into two stages. In the first phase, Judge Amit Mehta will rule on whether Google has violated antitrust laws in the way it manages search and search advertising.

If Google is found to have violated the antitrust law, Mehta will also decide how to deal with the problem. His measures may include asking Google to stop illegal activities, or asking Google to sell certain assets.

The US government called for "structural corrective measures as needed" in the indictment, but did not specify.

The lawsuit has huge implications for big technology companies. These companies are thought to be used to acquiring or stifling small competitors, but there are no monopoly charges because the services they offer are either free (such as Google) or cheap (such as Amazon).

Major antitrust lawsuits previously launched by the Justice Department include Microsoft in 1998 and AT&T in 1974. The spin-off of AT&T in 1982 was seen as paving the way for the modern mobile phone industry, while the lawsuit against Microsoft was seen as providing room for Google and other Internet companies to grow.
