CTOnews.com, September 12 (Xinhua) according to a paper published in the journal Science Advances on August 30, researchers Thomas Benson, Matthew Coble and John Dilles found tens of millions of tons of lithium deposits in an extinct volcano near the Nevada-Oregon border.

The researchers said in the paper that the lithium mine is located in the McDermitt crater lithium deposit, lithium reserves of 2000 to 40 million tons, shallow, large reserves. Researchers say that if proven, it is expected to overtake Bolivia's salt flats (23 million tons) to become the world's largest lithium mine, a discovery that could reshape the dynamics of global lithium supplies.

Some of the most abundant lithium deposits in the world are in salt marshes, but lithium from the McDermitt crater is locked in clay. The crater was formed about 1640 million years ago after a large amount of magma erupted. The crater was followed by a lake with lithium-containing deposits of more than 600 feet below. As volcanic activity continues and hot salt water containing lithium continues to be injected, there is now a unique clay mineral (illite) with ultra-high lithium content. It is said that this clay mineral is easier to separate.
