According to Shen, lithium-sulfur batteries have high energy density and great price competitiveness.
At present, South Korea's three major power battery manufacturers have lagged far behind Chinese companies in the market in the field of lithium iron phosphate, so all three companies are trying to compete for market share by developing "low-end, low-cost products".
CTOnews.com inquiries learned that Samsung SDI and SK On are currently focusing on cobalt-free batteries, while LG New Energy is developing lithium-sulfur batteries.
In fact, industry insiders have previously revealed that LG new energy plans to commercialize lithium-sulfur batteries as early as 2027, and aviation will become the first application field to be considered.

In other words, with the same battery, the range of the new electric car can be increased from 400 km to more than 700 km.

Unlike ternary batteries that use nickel, cobalt, manganese or aluminum, lithium-sulfur batteries use sulfur-carbon composites as cathode materials. In the battery, sulfur gradually transfers ions from anode to cathode under the action of reduction reaction, while lithium sulfide is converted into sulfur by reduction reaction when charging.
Of course, this kind of battery also has some shortcomings. at present, it is mainly due to the decline of life during repeated charge and discharge. after all, sulfur itself has low conductivity and low energy transfer efficiency, so it is necessary to increase the amount of electrolyte.
"there are still many challenges to overcome and the cost of all-solid-state batteries, so next-generation products such as lithium and sulfur have more advantages in commercialization," said an industry insider. "
