Shulou(Shulou.com)11/24 Report--
CTOnews.com, Sept. 10 (Xinhua) Android phones have seen a significant increase in storage space in recent years, and many manufacturers have stopped producing low-capacity models of 64GB, in part because Android and applications are also increasing the amount of storage space required. However, Android has serious errors in calculating the storage space occupied by system components and uses non-standard units.
We usually use Android's storage usage feature to find applications and files that take up a lot of space so that we can uninstall or delete them when needed. However, Android expert Mishaal Rahman found that Google's calculation of the space taken up by Android components is flawed.
Rahman creates a 3GB file in the / data / media / 0 storage directory by executing the shell command, which is not used to store Android files. However, the analysis of the phone's storage space shows that the 3GB footprint has increased under the system category, indicating that the system has suddenly become larger, because Android counts everything but other categories (including audio, video, pictures, documents, recycle bin and games) as system space, and Android 14 also uses this flawed logic to calculate storage usage. In addition, there has been a similar increase in the use of system component storage in the file manager application, probably because it uses the same untrusted computing method.
Other Android-based UI also have the same miscalculation of storage space, but Samsung has reportedly fixed this problem in the One UI 6 update. After performing the same ADB command as in the previous experiment, Rahman confirmed that the increased footprint was displayed under other file categories rather than under the system category.
CTOnews.com notes that Rahman also pointed out another small but important issue, which is that Android computing storage usage is different from smartphone manufacturers' promotion of storage capacity. Most people think that the storage capacity of mobile phones is in bytes, which can be expressed to the exponential power of 10. A gigabyte (GB) has 1000 ³bytes, and smartphone manufacturers also use gigabytes to promote storage capacity. Android, on the other hand, measures storage in gigabytes (GiB), or 1024 ³bytes, because it is represented as an exponential power of 2. Therefore, 1GB equals 0.93GiB. Because of this unit difference, smartphone users may think that Android operating systems installed on their phones take up more GB than they actually do. Coupled with incorrect storage usage calculations, the average Android user may think that the project takes up more storage space than it actually does.
Google needs to correct Android's computing logic on the storage space taken up by the system's components and quantify all content using the GB units that consumers are familiar with, which is also used by all smartphone hardware manufacturers.
