CTOnews.com Sept. 10, Microsoft released the dual-screen devices Surface Duo and Surface Neo in October 2019, the latter was cancelled before its launch, while the former was officially launched in September 2020. The dual-screen Android phone has excellent hardware design, but it also has limitations. It is expensive and only targeted at specific market needs. Today, Microsoft announced that it will stop supporting Surface Duo, which means that the life cycle of the original Surface Duo has come to an end.

Microsoft mentioned in its support documentation and release phase that the phone will receive three years of Android and security updates. According to the Neowin website, this period has expired, and September 10, 2023 marks the end of Surface Duo support.

Surface Duo preinstalled Android 10, but missed plans to upgrade to Android 11 in 2021 and did not receive an update until 2022. Eventually, the phone also received Android 12L, but this was the last official update it received.

Over the years, the price of the Surface Duo has also fallen sharply, from $1400 (CTOnews.com Note: currently about 10290 yuan) to a few hundred dollars because its hardware has not attracted enough attention in the consumer market. In the past two years, some enthusiastic developers have tried to run Android 13, unreleased Windows 10X and Windows 11 on the device.

The original Surface Duo has been replaced by Surface Duo 2, which has made significant improvements over the former in many aspects, but still faces a rather lukewarm response. For now, the former will no longer receive any system or security updates, while the latter will continue to receive updates until October 21, 2024. It is rumored that the next generation of Surface Duo will abandon hinge design and switch to a real folding screen, but Microsoft has not yet confirmed it.
