CTOnews.com, September 10 (Xinhua)-- researchers at the University of Rochester have developed an artificial intelligence tool that can help people with Parkinson's disease remotely assess the severity of their symptoms in minutes.
The new tool, published in the journal npj Digital Medicine, requires users to tap their fingers 10 times in front of a webcam and then assess exercise performance on a scale of 0-4.
According to CTOnews.com, doctors usually ask patients to do simple exercise tasks to assess dyskinesia and use guidelines such as the Motor Disorder Association Unified Parkinson's Disease rating scale (MDS-UPDRS) to assess severity. This artificial intelligence model can provide rapid assessment according to MDS-UPDRS guidelines, automatically generate interpretable, standardized, repeatable, consistent with medical guidelines, such as speed, amplitude, frequency and cycle, which use these attributes to classify the severity of tremor.
The finger tapping task, which involved 250 patients with Parkinson's disease around the world, showed that the scores of the artificial intelligence system were compared with those of three neurologists and three primary care doctors. The results showed that the performance of professional neurologists was slightly better than that of artificial intelligence models, but the performance of artificial intelligence models was better than that of primary care doctors certified by UPDRS.
Ehsan Hoque, associate professor of computer science at the University of Sturchester and co-director of the Rochester Human-computer interaction Laboratory, said: "these findings may have great implications for patients who have difficulty getting appointments from neurologists and visiting hospitals."
The researchers say their method can also be applied to other sports tasks, opening the door to the assessment of other types of motor disorders, such as ataxia and Huntington's disease. The new Parkinson's assessment tool is available online, but the researchers warn that the technology is still in its early stages and should not be seen as a decisive indicator of the existence or severity of the disease without the involvement of doctors.
