Thanks to CTOnews.com netizen Alejandro86 for the clue delivery! CTOnews.com, September 10, 2010, as an experimental feature of next month's Ubuntu 23.10 (Mantic Minotaur), Canonical will introduce initial support for TPM-based full-disk encryption to take advantage of the system's trusted platform module (TPM), but the drawback is that this feature is more dependent on Snap, including the kernel and GRUB boot loader.

Canonical announced that Ubuntu 23.10 (LTS 22.04.3) will bring experimental TPM full-disk encryption, which will be applied to classic Ubuntu desktop systems as a supplement to Ubuntu full-disk encryption support.

However, this experimental feature relies on the controversial Snap format, including the bootloader and the kernel will be presented as Snap packages instead of Debian packages, and Ubuntu will use a unified kernel image (UKI) to encapsulate the kernel and initramfs in a PE binary.

On the classic Ubuntu desktop, TPM-based FDE is based on the same architecture as the Ubuntu kernel and shares some design and implementation principles. That is, boot loaders (shim and GRUB) and kernel resources will be delivered as snap packages (through gadget and kernel snap), not as Debian packages. Therefore, it is the Snapd agent that manages global encryption throughout its lifecycle.
