CTOnews.com, September 9 (Xinhua)-- scientists have recently grown kidneys containing major human cells in pig embryos, marking an important step forward in artificial kidney cultivation and organ transplants.

In the findings, published Thursday in the journal Cell Stem Cell, scientists alter the genetic makeup of pig embryos and then inject them into human cells, which will continue to make kidneys in animals.

Scientists say this is the first time a usable humanized organ has been developed in another species. According to the study, when the embryo is implanted into a surrogate pig mother, it begins to grow kidneys that contain mainly human cells, which have a normal structure, 28 days after development.

Miguel Esteban, lead researcher and senior author of Guangzhou Institute of Biomedicine and Health, Chinese Academy of Sciences, wrote as follows: "during the five years of the project, we genetically modified pigs to create a growth space for human cells, reduce competition among pig cells, and transform human cells to survive in an unnatural environment."
