According to the news in the afternoon of September 8, Beijing time, Imbue, a start-up that builds large language models to drive artificial intelligence tools, has raised $200 million from investors such as Nvidia, valuing it at more than $1 billion (currently about 7.33 billion yuan).

The company said on Thursday that the round of financing was led by Astera Institute, a non-profit organization founded by cryptocurrency billionaire Jed McCaleb, and that Kyle Vogt, chief executive of GM's self-driving division Cruise, was also involved. The company said the amount of financing was 10 times what it had already raised.

Imbue is one of a growing number of artificial intelligence startups that are raising large amounts of capital this year. This reflects both the enthusiasm for artificial intelligence technology and the high cost of training artificial intelligence models by providing them with large amounts of online data. OpenAI, the US artificial intelligence research company, Anthropic, the AI startup backed by Google, and Cohere and Inflection AI, the start-ups, have all raised hundreds of millions of dollars or more to compete with larger technology companies in developing and deploying new models.

"Cash is much easier than computing power," Kanjun Qiu, co-founder and chief executive of Imbue, said in an interview with the media. "We acquired computing power a long time ago because we foresaw it. We are happy to have both."

Imbue says it has access to 10, 000 Nvidia's powerful graphics processing units (GPU) that handle intensive computing tasks that artificial intelligence companies that build large language models dream of.

Kanjun Qiu has previously founded artificial intelligence recruitment startup Sourceress and virtual reality startup Ember Hardware. The company is a rare artificial intelligence unicorn company valued at more than $1 billion and its chief executive is a woman.

Imbue, once known as General Intelligence (Generally Intelligent), focuses on building so-called artificial intelligence agents with reasoning capabilities. "eventually, we hope to release a system that allows anyone to build powerful, customized artificial intelligence agents and make artificial intelligence productivity within reach," the company wrote in a blog post announcing the round of financing on Thursday.
