CTOnews.com, Sept. 8 (Xinhua) Samsung's massive investment in its contract manufacturing business finally seems to have paid off. According to TrendForce, the company's contract chip manufacturing division is gaining market share.

In addition, Samsung is expected to start mass production of chips with 4nm process technology in the United States by the end of 2024, ahead of TSMC's Fab 21 plant in Arizona.

Samsung Co-CEO Kyung Kye-hyun said in a special speech at Seoul National University that Samsung foundry is optimistic about its position in the semiconductor market and is prepared to challenge TSMC more aggressively than before, the Korea Herald reported.

Samsung's upcoming fab near Taylor, Texas, will be the company's first leading production facility in the United States in many years. Samsung has high hopes that it will be able to meet the needs of many customers in the United States. and challenge the contract manufacturing services of Intel and TSMC.

If all goes according to plan, Samsung's new plant with 4 nanometer process technologies (SF4E, SF4, SF4P, SF4X and SF4A) will start mass production by the end of 2024, the report said. Although it is difficult to have an immediate impact on the contract manufacturing market, Samsung can say that it beat TSMC with the 4nm process in the United States.

However, Samsung OEM will still lag behind Intel OEM, which plans to start producing chips on its 20A (2 nm) nodes in 2024 and 18A (1.8 nm) nodes between 2024 and 2025.

Samsung's market share in contract chip manufacturing soared from 9.9 per cent in the first quarter to 11.7 per cent in the second quarter of 2023, with revenues of $3.234 billion (CTOnews.com Note: currently about 23.705 billion yuan), up from $2.757 billion in the first quarter, according to TrendForce. Although TSMC maintained its dominant position, its market share fell to 56.4 per cent, with revenue of $15.656 billion.
