CTOnews.com Sept. 8, according to Nikkei Asia, TSMC said on Wednesday that as many companies are promoting the AI model represented by ChatGPT, the supply shortage of AI chips will take about 18 months to ease.

At the recent SEMICON industry event, TSMC Chairman Liu Deyin said that the current supply restrictions on AI chips are only temporary and are expected to be significantly alleviated by the end of 2024. Liu Deyin said that TSMC has some problems such as the limited number of testing and packaging of TSMC in improving the production capacity of AI chips, and the lack of spatial layout capacity for complex chips at this stage.

'The demand for CoWoS chip packaging has suddenly increased this year, tripling, 'Mr. Liu explained.' now we can't meet 100% of our customers' needs, but we want to meet 80% of our orders.'

At the most recent quarterly report, TSMC management promised to double its core capacity by the end of 2024. TSMC will invest $2.9 billion (CTOnews.com Note: currently about 21.257 billion yuan) to build a new chip testing and packaging facility.

Mark Liu believes that the semiconductor industry must deal with a "paradigm shift". In order to further increase the number of transistors in the chip, manufacturers must increasingly adopt complex spatial arrangements.

TSMC management said that the flagship AI accelerator can now integrate up to 100 billion transistors, and that number will increase tenfold to more than 1 trillion in the next decade. This progress can be achieved by combining multiple crystals in a single package.
