CTOnews.com September 7, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) today issued guidelines on the use of generative AI in Education and Research. This is the first guidance document related to generative AI in the world, which aims to promote the integration of generative AI into education.

According to the introduction, the previous sections of the Guide explained generative AI and how it works, followed by the controversy over generative AI and its impact on education, with particular reference to how it will exacerbate the digital divide. The Guide will help policy makers and teachers to explore the potential of generative AI in the best way in the primary interests of learners.

The Guide also lists several key steps that governments should take, including relevant teacher training and the age limit for the use of AI tools in the classroom to 13.

In June this year, UNESCO warned that the use of generative AI by middle school students and staff in schools was too fast and faced a worrying lack of public oversight or regulations.

According to a recent global survey of more than 450 schools and universities, less than 10 per cent of schools and universities have institutional policies and formal guidance on the use of generative AI.

Audrey Azoulay, Director-General of UNESCO, pointed out that "generative AI can be not only a great opportunity for human development, but also cause harm and prejudice. Without public participation, without necessary policy guarantees and regulation, it cannot be integrated into education."
