In April, X announced its "freedom of speech, not freedom of coverage" (Freedom of Speech,Not Reach) policy. Under the policy, X began to limit the visibility of tweets that violated its policy, rather than removing content from the site as before.
In June, AJ Brown resigned from X. AJ Brown said publicly for the first time since resigning that it is very difficult to help advertisers understand this policy shift. "it is a difficult message to help people realize that violating the policy will no longer lead to the removal of anything that violates the policy," he said. "
On Monday, Elon Musk, the boss of X company, said that X platform's US advertising revenue fell 60%, mainly because the Anti-Defamation Alliance (ADL) put pressure on advertisers, so X was almost strangled. To that end, Musk threatened to sue ADL.
Before buying X, Mr Musk criticized the platform for restricting freedom of expression by deleting certain content and political freedom biases. After the deal was completed, many advertisers cut back on spending, fearing that their ads would appear next to harmful posts.
AJ Brown has worked at X for more than six years and has formed a team to prevent ads from appearing next to inappropriate content. He said that for advertisers who have suspended advertising on the X platform, the new content censorship policy will further increase their concerns.
AJ Brown also said he resigned because he disagreed with a decision made by Musk. Originally, the X team limited the scope of a documentary to be pushed on the platform, but was later overturned by Musk. Still, AJ Brown says he has the support of Mr Musk and other executives in his work on brand security. "when I was working there, I never felt undercommitted to the job," he said. "

Recently, AJ Brown became the chief operating officer of the Brand Security Institute (BSI). BSI is an advertising industry organization that provides certification and training for brand security staff at technology platforms such as TikTok, advertising agencies such as GroupM, owned by WPP, and large listed companies such as Kroger and NBC Global.
AJ Brown says one of his goals is to help BSI become a fair forum where brand security professionals from different parts of the advertising business can learn from each other.
