CTOnews.com, September 7 (Xinhua)-- European smartphone shipments fell 12% year-on-year in the second quarter of 2023, the lowest quarterly shipments since the first quarter of 2012, according to the latest Counterpoint Research report.

Samsung's share of mobile phones was 33%, compared with 31% in the same period last year, and shipments fell 8% year-on-year.

Apple's share is 23%, compared with 25% in the same period last year, and shipments are down 21% from a year earlier.

Xiaomi's share of mobile phones was 20%, compared with 19% in the same period last year, and shipments fell 9% year-on-year.

The share of realme phones is 4%, compared with 3% in the same period last year, and shipments are up 12% from the same period last year.

The share of OPPO phones is 3%, compared with 5% in the same period last year, and shipments are down 51% from the same period last year.

The share of other brand phones was 18%, compared with 16% in the same period last year, and shipments fell 14% year-on-year.

Shipments fell 51 per cent year-on-year as OPPO struggled in the second quarter of 2023 because of patent disputes and uncertainty in several countries, according to Counterpoint analysis. If this uncertainty continues, OPPO's shipments will decline further in the coming quarters. In addition, mainly under the influence of Russia, realme shipments increased 12% year-on-year, accounting for 55% of the brand's shipments in the region. Realme ranked second in Russia for five consecutive quarters.

On the outlook for the mobile phone market, Jan Stryjak, deputy director of Counterpoint, said: "the market is unlikely to fully recover this year. Smartphone shipments in 2023 will be lower than in 2022, making shipments the lowest in 10 years for the second year in a row. Although the economy is partly to blame, consumer buying behaviour is also changing, which means that lower sales levels will become the new normal. However, even if the overall shipments are not high, the future new generation of Apple's iPhone and Samsung's folding screen phones are still expected to achieve good market performance, driving a rebound in sales in the coming quarters.
