Hou Mingjuan said that under the upsurge caused by ChatGPT, generative AI brings unprecedented opportunities for development. AI has entered all aspects of people's lives at an astonishing speed, from the most familiar computers to smartphones, smart cars, smart factories, intelligent testing, and so on. She pointed out that the hybrid AI architecture distributes and cooperates with the workload of AI between the cloud and the terminal side, so that the users of these terminals can get a better AI experience, and the terminal side AI will play a more critical role. Only by realizing the popularity of AI on the terminal side can large-scale expansion of AI be realized.

She analyzed the reasons why terminal-side AI plays a key role in popularizing AI. At present, the computing cost of AI in the cloud is 10 times that of search engines, and this extra computing power brings billions of dollars of computing costs every year. Lack of computing power is the biggest reason that hinders the rapid popularity of AI. According to the complexity of the demand function, the hybrid AI architecture can choose to run on the cloud, or run on the terminal side, or dynamically distribute the load between the terminal and the cloud. If it exceeds the computing power of the terminal, it can seamlessly switch to cloud reasoning through networks such as 5G, and then return the calculus result. The terminal-side AI can effectively share the computing power and reduce the probability of the cloud AI hitting the computing bottleneck.

Hou Mingjuan pointed out that many Qualcomm scientists have invested a lot of research and development efforts to continuously iteratively optimize hardware and software to improve the performance and power consumption ratio of terminal-side AI. Qualcomm also launched the AI software stack, which integrates the AI framework, developer library, system software and operating system. With the help of software stack, developers only need to develop once to expand AI applications on different terminal types and different operating systems.
