Shulou(Shulou.com)11/24 Report--
Thanks to CTOnews.com netizen OC_Formula for the clue delivery! CTOnews.com, Sept. 7 (Xinhua) Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney recently posted his views on the use of AI tools in game development on social media, and he also criticized Steam, saying that Epic Games Store will not ban games from shelves because of "the use of new technologies."
The reason for this is that a developer wrote on Reddit last weekend that Steam took their games off the shelves because they used an optional ChatGPT mode. The timing also sparked a heated debate on X (Twitter), where Y Combinator CEO Garry Tan called Valve's opposition to AI "stupid". Tim Sweeney also appeared in the comments section, encouraging developers to put their games on Epic Games Store, writing: "We will not ban games from shelves because of the use of new technology, let's put it on Epic Games Store."
Epic Games's boss then elaborated on the issue, saying that all concerns about AI-generated material were justified, but that "a product that contains a lot of artificial content and some AI content can be protected as a whole, even if some of its specific material itself is not protected." "I think that while people can overtrain or adjust AI to abuse generative AI as a replication mechanism to deliberately replicate something similar to a particular work (as a human artist can do), this is usually not the case," he said. " Sweeney added that Epic Games will not use any customer content in its own service or market to train generative AI.
CTOnews.com notes that this is not the first time Sweeney has shared his views on AI. Last year he commented on protests by ArtStation (owned by Epic Games) and digital artists, saying: "I don't want Epic to be a company that stifles innovation. I've been on the wrong side too many times."
As for Valve's position on AI, earlier this year, several developers complained that Steam took their games off the shelves because they used AI-generated material. The company later explained that the main reason was "legal uncertainty related to the data used to train the AI model."We welcome and encourage innovation, and AI technology is bound to create a new and exciting gaming experience," Valve said in a statement. "while developers can use these AI technologies to complete their works with appropriate commercial licenses, they cannot infringe existing copyright."
