Qualcomm has released a physical version of the white paper "Hybrid AI is the Future of AI", which combs Qualcomm's observation on the development and application trend of AI technology, and hopes that through this release, we can explore the road of AI technology inclusion with more partners in more industries. Dr. Xu Yan, head of research and development of Qualcomm in China, gave a speech at the scene, reviewing Qualcomm's AI development history, deeply analyzing the leading advantages of hybrid AI, and introducing how Qualcomm makes 5G and AI complement and promote each other.
Qualcomm began to invest in AI research and development a long time ago, and Xu showed a series of progress signposts in Qualcomm's AI research and development process. In 2007, Qualcomm started the AI R & D project for the first time; in 2015, Qualcomm first released Qualcomm's AI engine, since then Qualcomm has continuously added the latest AI algorithms and capabilities to the new generation of Qualcomm AI engine, which has evolved to the eighth generation (such as the second generation of Snapdragon 85G chip); Qualcomm established the AI Research Institute in 2018; and brought 1 billion-parameter Stable Diffusion generation AI to smartphone terminals in 2023.
Xu pointed out that hybrid AI is an important way to popularize generative AI. Hybrid AI architecture is a unified framework that includes both large-scale data training in the cloud and terminal edge computing capabilities to connect the cloud to the terminal through a high-speed 5G network. Hybrid AI can distribute the load between the terminal and the cloud, for example, the simpler model and reasoning are left to run on the terminal side, and the complex model operation is done in the cloud. Pushing the AI capability down to the terminal can save energy consumption and network traffic, while also having a higher privacy guarantee. Only by popularizing terminal-side AI can we really make AI omnipresent. He also analyzed Qualcomm's advantages in terminal-side AI. There are already billions of Snapdragon-based mobile phones or other smart terminals around the world, still growing by hundreds of millions every year.
Xu also talked about some of Qualcomm's more technical AI applications. Qualcomm not only adds AI to Qualcomm's AI engine, but also applies AI to 5G modules. For example, Snapdragon X755G modems and RF systems have added special AI processors to help manage 5G beams and obtain better 5G signals; and use AI to improve satellite positioning capabilities and improve accuracy by 50 per cent. AI gains stronger data connectivity through 5G, and 5G helps AI improve performance. The two promote each other and grow together.
At the end of the sharing, Xu Xun said that Qualcomm shares the vision of AI and the latest R & D progress, and hopes to create cooperation opportunities with more partners to jointly promote the expansion of AI into more industries as AI changes with each passing day.
